What Makes Our Work Beautifully, Necessarily Human

In this candid reflection, Courtney Caldwell explores the tension between AI’s cheerful efficiency and the deeply human qualities at the heart of transformational coaching. Prompted by the question, “What remains beautifully, necessarily human in the work we do?” Courtney names what is irreplaceable. Drawing from her work at Henley Leadership Group and the Enneagram, she contrasts AI’s instant certainty with the relational, powerful work of sitting with not knowing. This piece reminds us that while AI can mimic intelligence, it cannot replicate the emotional depth and connection that real growth demands.

When AI Feels Familiar

It feels like AI is suddenly everywhere, all at once, so I have been thinking about it a lot lately.

The quickness. The ease of access. Answers returned confidently, without needing the full context or story. Bold declarations. Constantly incorporating new information based on input. Never saying, “I’m wrong.” Boldly telling others what to think and what they ought to do. And then changing course, with equal confidence.

By all of these measures, it would seem that AI might be an Eight on the Enneagram. Which means that AI and I might have a great deal in common. And maybe that’s what frustrates me so much about it. Ugh. All the things I’m trying to work on about myself are so blatantly on display in AI. There are great gifts to this, of course, but it can never fully capture the human experience.

Transformation, Not Transaction

Our work at Henley Leadership Group is about human-to-human interaction: transformation over transaction.

We give the gift of presence.

We update our understanding in real time, like noticing subtle signs of stress or defensiveness in a client, and pausing to ask what might actually be going on beneath the surface. But more importantly, we offer what AI never can:

  • The ability to sit in discomfort

  • The courage to grapple and not know the answer.

  • The space for someone to explore their own experience and ways of knowing.

We know there is no one-size-fits-all answer. That someone’s social identity is not merely an afterthought; it’s essential to how they experience the world and lead within it.

And we don’t rob our clients, or ourselves, of the delight and struggle of wrestling with uncertainty on the way to discovery.

The Work That AI Can’t Do

Our work allows people to laugh at themselves, at this ridiculous exercise of being human. It honors the rich tapestry of stories. It requires attention, stamina, curiosity, partnership, relationship, heart, ambiguity, and even rule-breaking. But especially, it requires love.

Our work returns answers like:

  • “Try again.”

  • “Ugh, that sounds tricky.”

  • “That’s hilarious.”

  • “Frustrating.”

  • “Wild.”

  • Or simply: “Why are you doing that?”

We don’t always have the answer. But we can say, “We might think about…” or “We might try…”

Why This Work Matters

In a world increasingly shaped by machines that deliver instant answers with mercurial certainty, leadership coaches take a different tack.

We’re grounded in human connection, comfortable with confusion and complexity, and willing to encourage the reflection and powerful self-discovery that leads to genuine transformation.

What Coaching Offers—That AI Can’t

  • AI may mirror not just our strengths, but also our biases and blind spots.

Its quick, confident answers and personable, non-judgmental tone may feel comforting, but AI won’t push back or offer honest feedback or have the difficult conversation that often leads to an ‘aha’ moment and meaningful growth. It’s not intelligent in that way.

  • Uncertainty and ambiguity can be fertile ground for profound learning,  self-discovery, and stepping up to what’s next.

Unlike AI, our work as leadership coaches thrives in nuance, ambiguity, and discomfort. We pause, reflect, and sit with what’s unclear because that’s where big transformation happens.

  • Powerful leadership is always grounded in presence.

Wise leadership doesn’t rush to answers. It stops to recognize and honor emotion, identity, and relationship—even paradox—inviting us to grapple, explore, and laugh at our beautifully imperfect, often baffling humanity.
